Wj. He et al., DEGENERATE SCALES AND BOUNDARY-ELEMENT ANALYSIS OF 2-DIMENSIONAL POTENTIAL AND ELASTICITY PROBLEMS, Computers & structures, 60(1), 1996, pp. 155-158
Some widely used conventional boundary integral equations yield non-eq
uivalent solutions compared to their corresponding boundary value prob
lems when the scales in the fundamental solutions reach their degenera
te scale values. The effects of such degenerate scales on a two-dimens
ional boundary element solution of potential and plane elasticity prob
lems are investigated for different geometries. Moreover, a simple con
venient method is suggested to evaluate these degenerate scales. On th
e other hand, using the necessary and sufficient boundary integral for
mulation can eliminate the non-equivalence of these conventional bound
ary integral formulations. Copyright (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd
