Abstract
Some widely used conventional boundary integral equations yield non-eq uivalent solutions compared to their corresponding boundary value prob lems when the scales in the fundamental solutions reach their degenera te scale values. The effects of such degenerate scales on a two-dimens ional boundary element solution of potential and plane elasticity prob lems are investigated for different geometries. Moreover, a simple con venient method is suggested to evaluate these degenerate scales. On th e other hand, using the necessary and sufficient boundary integral for mulation can eliminate the non-equivalence of these conventional bound ary integral formulations.
