Abstract
Fossil bones of the king shag, Leucocarbo carunculatus, are reported f rom the late Holocene dune deposits of Tokerau Beach, Doubtless Bay, N orthland, in the North Island of New Zealand. These fossils indicate t hat the present distribution is a relict one, and that the species' ra nge contracted after Polynesian colonists arrived in New Zealand.
