Abstract
Biotechnology has a long history in New Zealand, and there have been s ome innovations that are unique to the country. This article describes some developments that illustrate this point and gives some examples of current research projects that typify the strengths and interests o f the biotechnology community. Examples are taken from the food indust ry, agriculture, forestry, production of industrial chemicals, and the treatment of hazardous chemicals.
