Hypotensive anaesthesia can be employed to improve the outcome in a va
riety of surgical procedures, Since there is no single agent capable o
f safely and effectively lowering arterial pressure in all situations,
the anaesthetist may need to employ a variety of agents or techniques
in order to achieve the target pressure. This article considers the cu
rrently available methods of inducing hypotension and their applicatio
n to the safe conduct of anaesthesia.
