M. Stiavelli et G. Setti, NONEQUILIBRIUM MOTIONS IN GALAXIES AND GRAVITATIONAL REDSHIFT, Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 262(3), 1993, pp. 51-54
We have attempted to detect non-equilibrium motions in the cores of el
liptical galaxies by separating radial velocity profiles into their od
d and even components, latter being zero in equilibrium Newtonian syst
ems. Our sample of 24 objects has been assembled by considering publis
hed radial velocity profiles with error bars smaller than 10 km s-1. W
e detect such motions for 1 3 objects, but, surprisingly, in 12 of the
se cases the core is redshifted with respect to the outer parts. Altho
ugh most individual cases have only a limited statistical significance
, the significance for the complete sample is 99.9 per cent. We sugges
t that this systematic redshift of cores is a result of gravitational
redshift.
