Abstract
This paper presents a new problem solving environment that can utilize different forms of resources to approach better solutions in the dist ribution planning domain. To implement this concept, a design optimiza tion framework, named Design By Expectation (DBE), is developed. DBE e xploits the adaptation of Genetic Algorithms (GA's) in searching the o ptimal solution, and releases the strict requirements for objective fu nctions and constraints in conventional optimization techniques. One e xample, street lighting design, is used to demonstrate the applicabili ty of the proposed approach.
