A new fast approach to electrical power network analysis is presented
in this paper. A description of a real-time multimachine power system
simulator, developed at the University of Bath, will be given, which h
as been used rather than the more conventional fast decoupled load now
. The operation of the algorithms that have been developed as part of
this simulator will be described, together with an explanation of how
fuzzy set theory has been used for contingency screening and analysis,
as well as the identification of system transient and dynamic instabi
lity. Results are presented for these fuzzy algorithms and compared wi
th traditional numerical methods for the IEEE 57 bus system and a redu
ced British National Grid network. Finally, conclusions are drawn in t
he light of these results, illustrating the benefits that can be achie
ved with respect to accuracy and computational speed.
