The analysis of a nonlinear directional coupler consisted of two plana
r waveguides separated by a nematic liquid crystal is presented. The n
onlinear effect is caused by an optically-induced reorientational effe
ct occurring in hybrid aligned nematics. The asymmetrical configuratio
n causes the nonreciprocity in switching characteristics of the direct
ional coupler.
