Abstract
The paper introduces the concept of certifying or. qualifying structur es in a safety critical situation using the finite element method. Err or control and error treatment methods for this purpose are discussed together with the associated role of testing. The underlying methodolo gy follows the principles laid down in the SAFESA (SAFE Structural Ana lysis) method which is described in outline.
