Tu. Eliasson et al., SEXUAL FUNCTION BEFORE AND AFTER TRANSURETHRAL MICROWAVE THERMOTHERAPY FOR BENIGN PROSTATIC HYPERPLASIA, Scandinavian journal of urology and nephrology, 30(2), 1996, pp. 99-102
The effect of transurethral microwave thermotherapy (TUMT) for benign
prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) on the ability of achieving erection and e
jaculation was studied in one hundred and twenty patients. The patient
s underwent a single TUMT session for one hour without complementary t
reatment during the follow-up period of one year. A self-administered
questionnaire on sexual functions was used. Our results showed that, d
espite individual reductions, there was an overall improvement in the
ability to achieve erection. It was concluded that TUMT did not have a
ny major adverse effects on sexual functions. However, it was not poss
ible to predict that TUMT will improve sexual functions for the indivi
dual patient. Improvement of symptoms and a better quality of life may
influence the results.
