L. Taylor et al., X-RAY-DIFFRACTION STUDIES OF THE SMECTIC-A TO SMECTIC-C-ASTERISK TRANSITION WITHIN A SURFACE-STABILIZED LIQUID-CRYSTAL CELL, Molecular crystals and liquid crystals science and technology. Section A, Molecular crystals and liquid crystals, 263, 1995, pp. 255-270
The smectic A to smectic C transition of a commercial ferroelectric m
ixture (SCE13 and its racemic mixture) has been studied within a surfa
ce stabilised cell using X-ray 'rocking curve' techniques. An unusual
distribution of the layer orientation in the smectic A phase implies t
he existence of a tilted structure. This phenomenon in the smectic A p
hase is believed to be a result of an unusual temperature dependence o
f the layer thickness and a comparison with a typical material is repo
rted.
