Ra. Gherghescu et al., 2-DIMENSIONAL SEQUENCE OF SHAPES FOR COLD-FISSION OF FM-264, ZEITSCHRIFT FUR PHYSIK A-HADRONS AND NUCLEI, 354(4), 1996, pp. 367-373
The neutron-rich Fm-264 should be the best cold-fissioning nucleus, ow
ing to the strong shell effect of the doubly magic fragments Sn-132. T
he optimum cold fission path in the plane of two independent shape coo
rdinates, the separation distance R and of the radius of the light fra
gment R(2), is determined. Werner-Wheeler inertia tensor and Yukawa-pl
us-exponential deformation energy are used to calculate the action int
egral. Microscopic shell and pairing corrections are based on the asym
metric two-center single-particle model. Different variation laws R(2)
= R(2)(R), for the fission trajectory were tested: polynomials of 2nd
, 3rd, and 4th degree and an exponential function. The partial half-li
fe for cold fission is estimated to be several orders of magnitude sho
rter than that of alpha-decay.
