A low cost treatment alternative for cheese wastewater is discussed. T
he problem was to redesign three ponds which were operating below the
consents. Discharge rate is 500 m(3)/day with a high organic load (2,7
50 kg COD/day). The new system consisted of: a grease trap, an anaerob
ic UASB type pond, an aerated pond and an effluent polishing pond with
water hyacinth. Local technology was used except for the aeration equ
ipment. The project was done at a low capital investment (US$ 330,000)
and operational costs (US$ 0.55/m(3)) which were competitive with cur
rent marker prices but within the official environmental consents. Cop
