A technique for determining zirconium in waste waters of municipal tre
atment facilities and flax processing plants in concentrations from of
0.04 to 1.2 mg/liter is described. The reaction of o-nitrophenylfluor
one (ONPF) in the presence of cetylpyridinium (CP) chloride is propose
d for determining the zirconium. The reaction is selective. Most eleme
nts contained in the waste waters of flax plants do not interfere in d
etermining zirconium. The interference of Cr(VI) and Fe(In) is exclude
d by reducing them to Cr(III) and Fe(II). The limit at which zirconium
can be detected is 0.02 mg/liter.
