Silyl substituents stabilize ketenes, and permit the preparation of pe
rsistent bisketenes, which show characteristic C-13, O-17, and Si-29 N
MR chemical shifts. The structures and conformations of bisketenes hav
e been examined, as well as their interconversion with cyclobutenedion
es. A tetraketene has been prepared, and the hydration reactivity of c
arbon suboxide has been measured.
