M. Premanathan et al., IN-VITRO ANTI-HUMAN-IMMUNODEFICIENCY-VIRUS ACTIVITY OF MANGROVE PLANTS, INDIAN JOURNAL OF MEDICAL RESEARCH, 103, 1996, pp. 278-281
Mangrove plant extracts were screened in vitro against human immunodef
iciency virus (HIV) on MT-4 cells. HIV infected MT-4 cells were cultur
ed for five days in the presence of the extract, at various concentrat
ions. Anti-HIV activity was evaluated bg tetrazolium-based colorimetri
c assay. Seven extracts were found effective. Five of the active extra
cts completely inhibited the virus adsorption to the cells. Most of th
e active plants are from the family Rhizophoraceae.
