Aspects of improving the reliability of the results of the acoustic em
ission (AE) method on the basis of the experimentally observed statist
ical distributions of AE amplitudes and time intervals are investigate
d. A parameter characterizing the degree of distortion and overlap of
AE pulses is introduced. Estimates of the parameter are obtained from
recorded AE signals. Relations for improving the reliability of the re
sults of the AE method by reconstructing the stream of AE events from
recorded signals for different types of dead time and various methods
for the measurement of AE pulses are derived on the basis of the model
of a Poisson stream of events.
