The incorporation of zeolite particles within glucose oxidase containi
ng carbon paste leads to improved amperometric biosensing of glucose.
Such zeolite dispersion offers enhanced sensitivity, extended linear r
ange and higher stability. Such improvements are attributed to the for
mation of a porous paste network that exposes the enzyme contained in
the interior of the paste to the substrate solution and imparts higher
mass transport resistance. Several electrode configurations shed usef
ul insights into the diffusion processes within the compact zeolite-ca
rbon paste-enzyme microstructure and the thickness of the active enzym
e layer. The mass-transport induced increases in K-m are attributed to
diffusional limitations within the electrode interior.
