Luminescence in organic conjugated polymers is considered in this arti
cle, which tries to clarify some of the issues related to the nature o
f the emitting species. A comparison of recent experimental and theore
tical data on the exciton binding energy in luminescent poly(arylenevi
nylene)s, polyarylenes, and their derivatives (e.g., see Figure) leads
to the conclusion that they sustain rather weakly bound polaron-exito
ns.
