Test equipment was designed to study the abrasion of carbon cathode ma
terials by alumina slurry at room temperature. The alumina was suspend
ed in a heavy liquid-sodium polytungstate aqueous solution (SPT). Effe
cts of test time, specimen velocity and solid concentration of the slu
rry were studied. The wear mechanism is discussed. Various carbon cath
ode materials are ranked against CS graphite which was used as the sta
ndard. Copyright (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd
