Laboratory tests on 17 reinforced concrete external beam-column connec
tions are described-15 subjected to monotonic lending and two to simul
ated seismic loading. Parameters investigated were beam depth, beam te
nsion steel percentage, reinforcement details for beam tension steel.
and column load. Detailed measurements of strain distributions along b
oth the beam and column bars were made using internally strain-gaged r
einforcement, and results are presented to indicate influences exerted
by the rest parameters on reinforcement strain distributions. Bond st
resses along the beam tension steel were evaluated and the means by wh
ich the reinforcement details effected load transfer by bond determine
d. Recommendations are made concerning the effectiveness and suitabili
ty of these details in practical connection design.
