The use of linear peptides as antigens for detection of serum antibodi
es has been studied using a sequence of the Borrelia burgdorferi prote
in, flagellin, and Lyme disease sera as a model, It was found that a n
ovel presentation of the peptide as a hapten on the carrier protein, b
ovine serum albumin, in the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay format c
an be successfully applied to distinguish between Lyme disease and con
trol sera.
