This paper proposes a Spanish version of the Daneman and Carpenter's (
1980), Reading Span Test (RST) in order to use it in a standardized wa
y by the Spanish researchers. As WM is involved in that comprehension,
RST reflects the trade-off between its processing (reading a series o
f sentences) and storage functions (the recall of the final word of ea
ch sentence). This is the main difference between this task and the cl
assical span measures which would explain the capacity of this measure
to predict a text comprehension skill opposite to a Word Span Test (W
ST) in comprehension processes. Results with both tests are presented.
Furthermore, the correlations between RST and WST with three comprehe
nsion measures (reading time, macrostructure construction tasks that i
mplied several macrorules and a free recall task) were analized. These
results suggested that RST is a valid measure of WM in text comprehen
sion.
