Abstract
The C-13 NMR spectra of 24 lignin model compounds in organic solvents (DMSO-D-6, acetone-D-6) and in aqueous alkali are compared, and ionisa tion chemical shifts (ICS) determined. The data are used to interpret the spectra of lignins in aqueous alkali. The difference between the N MR spectra of lignins in their molecular and ionized forms is characte ristic of lignin structure evidencing the number of free phenolic hydr oxyl groups.
