ATM networks provide high-speed broadband communication and they can a
ssign network resources flexibly to each communication because the nec
essary number of cells are generated according to the amount of inform
ation to be conveyed. However, its flexibility raises new problems for
resource management. Although ATM networks offer services that have d
iverse traffic characteristics, they must support these services econo
mically with assurance that quality of service objectives are satisfie
d. In order to clarify traffic characteristics, we have developed a tr
affic engineering workstation. This paper describes its concept and de
sign.
