A new intermetallic compound labelled the tau-phase with an orthorhomb
ic structure (a = 0.4044 nm, b = 0.3436 nm and c = 0-2867 nm) is forme
d throughout the 8 matrix during isothermal heat treatment in the temp
erature range below 650-degrees-C. The face-centred orthorhombic Brava
is lattice and Fmmm space group are established by electron microdiffr
action in conjunction with group theory analysis. The tau-phase crysta
l lattice is oriented with respect to the surrounding delta matrix acc
ording to the Bain orientation relationship. The defects inside tau pa
rticles were analysed as sequence faults.
