TAPERED BEAM-PROPAGATION

A novel beam propagation algorithm is presented that eliminates errors caused by modelling tapered optical structures with staircase approxi mations. In consequence; highly accurate results are obtained with a s ubstantial improvement in computational efficiency. The algorithm is d eveloped from a nonorthogonal coordinate system that intrinsically des cribes the taper geometry and can be implemented using conventional be am propagation techniques.
