Abstract
This paper discusses the basics of digital image compression and expla ins the conceptual differences of various approaches. Two techniques, the standard JPEG algorithm and the newly developed Hierarchical Predi ctive Coding (HPC) approach, are described in detail. They are compare d with respect to geometric quality, loss of information, compression ratio, and compression speed. JPEG yields better compression ratios; h owever, it is significantly slower than HPC.
