Cardiac metastasis from gynecological malignancies is rare. Only six c
ases of carcinoma of the uterine cervix have been reported where the d
iagnosis of malignant pericardial effusion was made antemortem. The tr
eatment of neoplastic pericardial effusion is controversial; both surg
ical and nonsurgical treatments are advocated. We present a patient wi
th pericardial effusion secondary to carcinoma of the cervix and recom
mend subxiphoid pericardial fenestration for reliable long-term contro
l of malignant effusion. (C) 1996 Academic Press, Inc.
