Abstract
Glutathione-S-transferase (GST) activity of maize (Zea mays L.) seedli ngs treated with 1-aminobenzotriazole (BET) derivatives and/or EPTC we re measured using EPTC-sulfoxide as substrate. Both safeners and ABT d erivatives significantly elevated the GST activity in the concentratio ns needed for effective safening action. ABT is considered as an inhib itor of plant cytochrome P-450 monooxygenases (P-450) and, because of this, used to study herbicide mode of action. Our data indicate that A BT has multiple effects on plants influencing not only P-450 but GST a s well. Thus the role of ABT in herbicide metabolism needs reconsidera tion.
