Ma. Lopes et Sf. Ferrari, PRELIMINARY-OBSERVATIONS ON THE KAAPOR CAPUCHIN, CEBUS-KAAPORI QUEIROZ 1992, FROM EASTERN BRAZILIAN AMAZONIA, Biological Conservation, 76(3), 1996, pp. 321-324
Preliminary observations on the geographical distribution and conserva
tion status of the recently described Ka'apor capuchin Cebus kaapori,
endemic to eastern Amazonia, are presented. The data presented confirm
the species' rarity, given that it both has a relatively restricted g
eographical distribution in comparison with most other Amazonian prima
tes and occurs at extremely low population densities. Additional probl
ems for its conservation are hunting pressure and the devastating scal
e of deforestation within the region. C. kaapori is thus one of the mo
st, if not the most, endangered, of Amazonian mammals; this also re-em
phasizes the importance of eastern Amazonia for the conservation of Am
azonian biodiversity as a whole. Copyright (C) 1996 Elsevier Science L
