Waynea adscendens Rico, previously known in only four places in SE Spa
in, exists also in SE France, but represented only by sterile specimen
s. Theses are easily differentiated from W. stoechadiana (Abbassi Maaf
et Roux) Roux et Clerc by their morphology (non geotropic squamules a
nd forciniform or cupuliform soralia), anatomy (cortex distinctly pros
oplectenchymatous, thicker medullary hyphae), chemistry (no lichen sub
stance) and ecology (less thermophilous). They differ from W. californ
ica Moberg by their clearly prosoplectenchymatous cortex and their thi
cker medullary hyphae.
