We have measured the two-photon absorption coefficent at 0.527 mu m to
be 1.8 +/- 0.4 x 10(-3) cm/GW in a germanium-doped silica fiber. Usin
g absorption and luminescence measurements we estimated the two-photon
absorption coefficient at 1.053 mu m to be smaller than 6 X 10(-7) cm
/GW. Using a capacitive technique we measured the photoconductivity to
be approximately 6 X 10(-9) 1/Ohm cm in the visible. The photoconduct
ivity inreased linearly with intensity. A qualitative discussion of th
e defect dynamics related to photosensitive phenomena in optical glass
fibers is given based on the experimental results. (C) 1996 American
