Inelastic-neutron-scattering experiments have been performed on the ca
nonical heavy-fermion compound CeCu6 over a wide range of energy trans
fers (up to 100 meV). We find evidence for two inelastic crystal-field
transitions from the ground state at 7.0 and 13.8 meV, in addition to
substantial quasielastic scattering. The crystal-field-level scheme (
0-7-13.8 meV) determined by neutron spectroscopy is compared to estima
tions based on macroscopic measurements and optical reflectivity.
