It has been shown that the factors that determine a physical parameter
of a monosubstituted hydrocarbon derivative originate mainly from the
alkyl group. Thus, the physical parameters of any two series of these
compounds, whether constitutive or not, plot linearly against each ot
her. Examples are given which demonstrate that non-constitutive parame
ters such as normal boiling points or indices of refraction, can be co
nverted into constitutive ones by combining them with a constitutive p
arameter corresponding to the same homologous sequence. The implicatio
n of this to the recently reported deviation of the long-chain aliphat
ic compounds from Trouton's rule is discussed.
