Abstract
The combination of substance abuse and depression worsens prognosis bu t also provides opportunities. Effective treatment of previously unadd ressed substance abuse may improve outcome in treatment-resistant depr ession. Treatment of depression may improve substance use outcome. Sub stance abuse may point toward other comorbid disorders, such as attent ion deficit or anxiety disorders, which, if heated, may improve outcom e. Recommendations are developed for the evaluation and management of treatment-resistant patients with depression and substance use disorde rs.
