On the basis of simple qualitative considerations an approximate expre
ssion was derived for the scattering function of a hydroacoustical cha
nnel in a shallow sea, which depends only on determinate characteristi
cs of the channel. Conditions at which the effect of sound scattering,
a at random inhomogeneities may be ignored in the estimation of signal
spreading in a hydroacoustical waveguide were revised. A comparison o
f this function with measurements in a shallow region confirmed its us
efulness for signal spread estimation in the sea.
