Abstract
The role of valence electrons in filling inner-shell vacancies of high ly charged ions in metals is studied using self-consistent solid state screened potentials. Explicit results for Ne and N ions in Au and Al targets are presented and discussed in connection to recent experiment s. These filling rates are fundamental in understanding the neutraliza tion and relaxation of highly charged ions in solids.
