Abstract
By means of an 8 bit CCD line scanner, high resolution images from pho tographic plates can be obtained and stored in TIFF format. We describ e the device, the scanning process and the software for automatic dete rmination of the brightness of star-like objects on a plate. We applie d the method to photographic plates taken with the 40/200-Astrograph o f Sonneberg Observatory. The accuracy attainable for stars with photog raphic magnitudes between 9m and 18m can be 0.04 mag on well-exposed p lates.
