The crystal and molecular structures of two substituted pyridinium sal
ts of the cobalt(II)tetrachloride anion, [4-picolinium](2)[CoCl4] 1 an
d [4,4'-Bipyridinium][CoCl4] 2, isolated from liquid clathrate media a
re reported in order to gain an understanding into the preferred orien
tation adopted by such interacting moieties. We demonstrate that M-Cl
... H-N hydrogen bonds principally govern the solid-state self-assembl
y of these systems. Furthermore, rye reveal that 1 possesses the first
noted example of a dimeric three-center hydrogen bond.
