P. Prakash et al., POLAROID SCOTOMETER - A NEW DEVICE TO CHART SUPPRESSION SCOTOMAS, Journal of pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus, 33(3), 1996, pp. 181-184
Suppression, an active inhibition of vision in one eye under binocular
conditions, is a sensory adaptation in concomitant strabismus. The ch
aracteristics and extent of suppression differ not only in different t
ypes of strabismus but also in the same type under different testing c
onditions, which may differ in their degree of dissociation. The findi
ngs in exodeviations have thus varied from regional suppression to hem
iretinal trigger, and in esodeviations from two point scotoma to singl
e large scotoma. There is a need for a simple but less dissociative te
st to chart the fields under binocular conditions. We have devised a n
ew, simple instrument based on polaroid dissociation. The findings cor
roborate the findings of more sophisticated tests like phase-differenc
e haploscope.
