A new neutron-rich isotope Tb-166 produced in 16 MeV proton-induced fi
ssion of U-238 has been identified using the JAERI on-line isotope sep
arator (JAERI-ISOL) coupled to a gas-jet transport system. Dy KX-rays
and gamma rays originating from the decay of Tb-166 were found in both
mass-166 and 182 fractions, where the Tb-166 nuclides were mass-separ
ated as elemental ions Tb-166(+) and monoxide ions (TbO+)-Tb-166, resp
ectively. The half-life of Tb-166 has been determined as 21 +/- 6 s, w
hich is much shorter than theoretical predictions. A decay scheme of T
b-166 has been proposed and a probable spin assignment for the Tb-166
ground state has been discussed.
