Raman scattering experiments were performed on single optically levita
ted microparticles. In comparison with bulk experiments an dramatic en
hancement of the Raman scattering relative to the fluorescence scatter
ing was observed. Two real-world samples, a monomer for use in laser s
tereolithography and an engine lubricant, were investigated. Furthermo
re Dioctylphthalat (DOP), doped with fluorescent dye Coumarin 6, was s
tudied by Raman spectroscopy in a droplet chain, on an optically levit
ated particle and in a cuvette. The combination of Raman spectroscopy
and optical levitation could be a new offspring for analytical applica
tions of Raman spectroscopy. Liquid and solid microparticles with a fe
w nanograms in mass can be investigated by this technique with excelle
nt signal-to-noise ratio.
