A series of metal(II) benzoylhydrazine-azide complexes of the type M(B
H)(N-3)(2).3H(2)O where M = Co(II), Ni(II), Zn(ll), Cd(II) and BH = be
nzoylhydrazine, C6H5CONHNH2, characterized by elemental analyses, magn
etic susceptibility, electronic and IR spectral data. The complexes ar
e highly insoluble, powdery materials and decompose without melting. C
o(II) and Ni(II) complexes are paramagnetic and octahedral. BH acts as
a bidentate ligand coordinating through >C=O and -NH2 groups. BH, Co(
BH)(N-3)(2).3H(2)O and Ni(BH)(N-3)(2).3H(2)O, screened against cyanoba
cteria Synechococcus cedrorum, a unicellular, non-nitrogen fixing meso
philic blue green algae, show moderate inhibition of algal growth and
formation of protein, carbohydrate and photosynthetic pigments (chloro
phyll-a, carotenoids, phycocyanin). Carbon fixation studies, using C-1
4 labelled NaHCO3 solution Indicate that carbon fixation occurs in the
order: Co(BH)(N-3)(2).3H(2)O > Ni(BH)(N-3)(2).3H(2)O > BH. The three
compounds catalyse the photodecomposition and enhance the oxygen evolu
tion during the photosynthesis in the order: Ni(BH)(N-3)(2).3H(2)O > C
o(BH)(N-3)(2).3H(2)O > BH.
