Abstract
Flash vacuum pyrolysis (FVP) of o-allyloxycinnamate esters gives benzo furans in high yield, via cyclisation of a phenoxyl radical and subseq uent cleavage of the carboxylic ester function; coumarins are obtained by FVP of the corresponding phenols.
