Cryosurgical ablation of the prostate (CSAP) represents an innovative
yet controversial treatment for patients with prostate carcinoma. This
article reviews the development of CSAP and the prevailing understand
ing of its mechanisms of action. Current reported results of CSAP in t
he management of patients with various forms of prostate carcinoma are
discussed, and the potential role of CSAP as a therapeutic option for
these patients is examined.
