Corrosion behaviour of various steels and alloys in the solvent extrac
tion coal liquefaction process in Japan has been studied by the inplan
t testing in a 1 ton/day plant and by the laboratory tests related to
it. The severest corrosion was observed in the high pressure separator
, corrosion thickness loss and pitting depth being the greatest and st
ress corrosion cracking bring observed for 18-8 series austenitic stai
nless steels. The cause may be the occurrence of water condensate cont
aining high Cl- and H2S. Otherwise corrosion was relatively mild. No o
bvious symptom of notorious organ ic-chloride corrosion reported in th
e U.S. has been observed.
