A new soluble polydiacetylene with fluoro-aromatic rings directly atta
ched to the pi-conjugated main-chain backbone was synthesized by gamma
-radiation solid-state polymerization. The blue thin films of poly(flu
orophenyl-diacetylene) could be only obtained from its red chloroform
solution by a spin-coating technique. The third-order nonlinear optica
l susceptibilities of spin-coated amorphous thin films of poly(fluorop
henyl-diacetylene) were measured by third-order harmonic generation. T
he third-order nonlinear optical coefficient susceptibility chi((3)),
calculated by comparing the 3 omega signal intensity of sample with th
at of a standard fused silica plate, was about 6.4 x 10(-11) esu.
