Technetium-99m-ethylenedicysteine (Tc-99m-EC) captopril scintigraphy p
erformed in a patient with severe hypertension revealed increased pare
nchymal retention in tile left kidney, suggesting renal artery stenosi
s, After angiographic confirmation of renal artery stenosis, percutane
ous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) was performed on the left renal art
ery, Captopril scintigraphy after PTA showed normal findings with no e
vidence of parenchymal retention, consistent with reversal to normal k
idney functions, In light of this case of renal artery stenosis, it wa
s concluded that Tc-99m-EC can be used successfully as a potential ren
al agent in the diagnosis and follow-up of renovascular hypertension.
