Simple, general, explicit expressions are given for the elastic field
generated in two firmly joined, or slipping, dissimilar, homogeneous a
nd isotropic, semi-infinite solids, when the interior of one of them c
ontains an arbitrary nucleus of strain or other elastic singularity. T
he singularity is defined by reference to the elastic field it would i
nduce on its own in an infinitely extended homogeneous and isotropic m
edium. That fundamental field is converted immediately by our formulae
into the corresponding one in the two-phase solid. We refer also to t
he method of images, particularly in connection with a point force (Gr
een's functions) and a centre of dilatation, for firmly bonded half-sp
aces. (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd
